Manual Transfer Switch vs. Automatic Transfer Switch: Which Is Right for Your Home?
A transfer switch safely connects a generator to your home’s electrical system — and the choice between manual and automatic is one of the most important decisions in any generator installation. The short answer: if you have a standby generator, you need an automatic transfer switch. If you have a portable generator, a manual transfer switch is a safe and practical option. Here’s what each one does and why it matters.
Why You Need a Transfer Switch at All
Connecting a generator to your home without a transfer switch — by plugging it into a wall outlet or jury-rigging a panel connection — is dangerous and illegal. This practice, known as “back-feeding,” allows generator power to flow back through your meter and onto utility lines, creating a potentially lethal hazard for utility workers. A properly installed transfer switch prevents this by isolating your home from the utility line whenever the generator is connected.
Manual Transfer Switches
A manual transfer switch (MTS) is a secondary electrical panel installed next to your main panel. During a power outage, you manually start your portable generator, then physically flip switches on the MTS to transfer selected circuits to generator power.
Advantages:
- Lower cost than automatic systems (typically $500–$1,500 installed for a 6–10 circuit MTS)
- Works with portable generators
- Simple and reliable
- Allows you to prioritize which circuits get generator power
Disadvantages:
- Requires you to be home and physically present during an outage
- Must manually start and connect the portable generator each time — including during a hurricane
- Limited to 6–10 circuits; doesn’t cover the whole home
Automatic Transfer Switches
An automatic transfer switch (ATS) is wired directly between your utility service and your standby generator. It monitors incoming utility voltage around the clock. When it detects that utility power has failed, it starts the standby generator automatically within seconds and transfers your home’s load — without any action from you.
Advantages:
- Completely automatic — works whether you’re home, asleep, or away on vacation
- Protects the whole home
- Required for all standby generators
- Modern units include diagnostics, remote monitoring, and self-testing
Disadvantages:
- Higher cost — typically adds $1,000–$2,500 to the total project cost
- Only works with standby generators — not portable units

What Installation Involves
